I enjoy planning destination weddings but I also enjoy exploring unusual and little known locations. This week I had the opportunity to join Lisa Light of Destination Bride and Terry Gruber of Gruber Photographers in Belize. Before going into weddings in Belize, here are a couple of facts about this little known country:
- Formerly known as British Honduras
- Belize is only 30 years old
- Entire population is 300,000
- Home to the longest coral reef in the Western Hemisphere
- English is the primary language
- Well known for scuba, snorkeling & fishing
- Becoming a popular destination wedding location
After flying into Belize City I boarded a Tropic Air 14 passenger prop plane for the 20 minute flight to San Pedro on the island of Ambergris caye. After landing I was greeted by a friendly taxi driver who took me to a small marina for yet another mode of transportation, a water taxi. After about 25 minutes on the water, I arrived to my new home at Portofino on the north end of Ambergris. The owners, Jan and Sandra van Noord are gracious and extremely welcoming. I enjoyed their hospitality and accommodations from the moment I arrived.
My first impressions of Belize, Ambergris caye and Portofino are exactly the same…authentic. The people, the ambience and atmosphere are authentic and unaffected by tourism. I’m anxious to share more specifics about my trip and details about Belize as a fabulous new destination location, but for now want to share some of my favorite photos that depict my sentiments.
These are just a few of my favorite images which perfectly represent the truly authentic Belize.
